Changing the oil in your own car can be a great way to feel more connected to your vehicle and take an active hand in its maintenance. If you’ve never done this before, it can be a great learning experience and give you a sense of satisfaction from learning something new. If you have, it can even become therapeutic. Just don’t forget to reset the oil light after. We’ll go over how to do that in the most recent generations of Honda Accord.

The most recent Honda Accords have two options for resetting the oil light: the steering wheel controls or the infotainment touchscreen. Either way, you will have to turn the key to the “on” position in the ignition to start the computer, but don’t get the engine started. Using the steering wheel controls, press the home button and use the scroll wheel to navigate down to “maintenance” and click the wheel in.
While the oil life meter is displayed, click and hold the scroll wheel. From there, you can choose to reset just the oil meter with “Item A Only,” or you can clear all maintenance notifications and reset “All Due Items”. When you select the option that you want, the oil life reading will be reset to 100%.
Using the infotainment touchscreen, select “Home” from the menu, go to “Settings”, then “Vehicle”, then “Maintenance Info”. Once there, choose “Select Reset Items”, scroll to “Oil & Filter”, and hit “Reset”.

2013-2017 Honda Accord Model Years
It is easier to reset a Honda Accord Oil Light from the ninth generation. If your Accord is not equipped with Honda’s Multi-Information Display, turn the key to “On”, look for the “SELECT/RESET” button on the right side of the instrument panel. Click this button repeatedly until the display screen in the center of the instrument cluster shows the oil life reading. Once you see that, hold down the “SELECT/RESET” button until the percentage and service code start blinking, then hold the button down for another five seconds. The oil light should be reset.
If your Accord does have the Multi-Information Display, you can use the controls below the right spoke of the steering wheel to reset a Honda Accord oil light. You still have to move the key to the “On” position. Use the up and down buttons to navigate your way to “Vehicle Settings,” then use the “SEL/RESET” button to select that menu. Once there, scroll down to “Maintenance Reset: and then hit the “SEL/RESET” button again to reset the oil life.
2006-2012 Honda Accord Model Years
As with the newer models, start the car but don’t start the engine. The process for these model years is quite similar to the process for the newer models without the Multi-Information Display. Use the button on the side of the instrument panel to cycle through menu options until you see the oil life indicator. Once that shows up, hold down the button for 10 seconds until the indicators are blinking, then let go. Now press and hold the button until the service code goes away and the oil life is reset to 100%.

1997-2005 Honda Accord Model Years
The process for these model years starts with the ignition turned off. First, press and hold the “SELECT/RESET” button on the instrument panel, then switch the ignition to on while still holding the button. Holding the button down will reset the oil life indicator after about 10 seconds. Once you have done this, you can turn the car off, and the next time you start the engine, the low oil life indicator light should no longer come on.
1982-1996 Honda Accord Model Years
For the first decade and a half of the Accord’s life, it had a much simpler way to turn off the low oil light. Near the bottom of the instrument panel, there is a keyhole for resetting the maintenance indicators. Put the ignition key into this hole and keep it there until the maintenance light turns off.
